Let There Be Pie

We finally made it to the pie shop, on the day of its glorious re-opening after Christmas break (and the hectic pre-holiday order rush). The shop began life as tables set up at local farmers’ markets, like Westover and Columbia Pike (where you can also find Acme Pie; both markets operate year-round).

Savory: I order a spinach-and-Gruyére. Creamy, buttery, flaky — and not too heavy on the spinach or the dough. Nice and warm on this below-freezing day. Could have easily inhaled a second one. There’s no better cheese for baking than Gruyére and it makes us crave a grilled-cheese sandwich. Maybe this weekend with Vidalias and tomato soup.

Sweet (but not too): Cherry crumble. A tart tart. It’s clear why this is considered one of the best pie places around. This is what your mother would make if she loved you. We like to cook, but is there anything better than someone baking you pie? That’s rhetorical.

We’ll come back in a few months when rhubarb (like strawberries) is in season.
